LG uses Google Cardboard as the framework for the VR for G3, but it has one important difference: It's not cardboard. The VR is plastic, and while it's not nearly as sturdy or attractive as the thick, glossy plastic of the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition, it's also not nearly as flimsy as a Google Cardboard headset made out of actual cardboard. For a free, promotional accessory, it's actually a well-crafted plastic box, with resilient parts that fit together securely.

The VR for G3 is about as clever as a mostly empty plastic box can possibly be without requiring some sort of puzzle solving to open it. It's an almost completely flat, black-and-white box consisting of three pieces, and at first glance it seems to be a deeply uncomfortable VR facebrick. Fortunately, the three pieces come apart, and the seemingly flat, lens-bearing black piece flips around to reveal a much more curved and natural-looking face mask part with a cutout for the nose. The second black piece is an empty sleeve with two compartments to offer space between the lenses and the G3 screen, and holds a Google Cardboard-style sliding magnetic button on the left side.
