What is ZIKA Virus and how is it transmitted?

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptom of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptom lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.

In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil. The outbreak in Brazil led to reports of Guillain-Barre syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.

Agencies investigating ZIKA outbreaks are finding an increasing body of evidence that links ZIKA virus and microcephaly (an incomplete brain development resulting in an abnormal small head) for new born.

How Does Citronella Keep Mosquito Away?

Citronella works by masking scents that are attractive to insects namely carbon dioxide and lactic acid in humans according to the NPIC.

Unlike other varieties of pesticides, citronella not does kill mosquitoes rather it repels them and other pests, reducing the number of mosquitos that land nearby. Researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario studied the effectiveness of citronella by using candles with a three percent concentration of the oil. The citronella candles effectively reduced mosquito landings by 42 percent, according to their study published in the National Institute of Health library.

One benefit of using citronella as mosquito repellent is that it is safe and non-toxic to humans and animals.
