Tal-Val-Peang (Derris scandens Benth) Overview: Derris scandens Benth (Family: Leguminosae) is a woody vine growing throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Derris scandens is one of the medicinal plants commonly used in Thailand. In Thai traditional medicine, the stem of Derris scandens has been widely used as an expectorant, antitussive, diuretic, anti-dysentery and for treatment of cachexia. In addition Thai people usually take an extract containing an infusion of roasted stems of Derris scandens or its alcoholic macerate as a tonic. Its chemical constituents that have been reported are derrisisoflavones A-F. Derris scandens is one of the components in traditional medicine for health promotion, its effect may be due to immunostimulating activity on the muscles and immune system.
