Benefit of UMF Manuka Honey
Normal honey kills bacteria mainly by hydrogen peroxide produced by enzyme. The enzyme that produced hydrogen peroxide is light and heat sensitive. Therefore normal honey when expose to light and heat for an extended period will reduce the antibacterial potential of normal honey.
UMF® Manuka honey kills bacteria via non-peroxide activity (NPA) and the NPA is heat stable and insensitive to light. It is because of the very stable antibacterial profile of UMF® Manuka honey that makes UMF® Manuka Honey very effective against bacterial. This stable property also ensures that long term storage of UMF® Manuka honey will not reduce the antibacterial potency.
Each tub of Manuka honey bears its own Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) – a scale that identifies the level of anti-bacterial potency in that particular supply. A UMF rating of 10+ is the minimum required to gain the UMF rating and thus be considered effective for purpose.
All honeys boast some level of antibacterial powers, but Manuka is accepted to contain properties that are superior to those found in other strains.
