Rocaltrol is a generic brand of the drug calcitriol, which is used to increase the blood calcium levels in the body by promoting the absorption of dietary calcium in the stomach. We normally get vitamin D from sunlight and dietary sources. The vitamin is broken down in the stomach and converted into its active form by the liver and kidneys. Active-form vitamin D is necessary for the absorption and function of calcium in the body. Kidney disease and renal failure can disrupt the production of active-form vitamin D which in turn creates a deficiency of calcium and phosphate in the blood.
