Planter box mounted on gate pillars. There is no leaks or excess water from the system unlike a pot with soil.
What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is a branch of agriculture where plants are grown without the use of soil. The nutrients that the plants normally derive from the soil are simply dissolved into water instead.
Why Hydroponics is preffered over traditional method (using soil)?
1) Ability to grow food in places (eg: Singapore & Malaysia) where traditional agriculture simply isn't possible
2) Useful in dense urban areas (eg: In Tokyo, hydroponics is used in lieu of traditional soil-based plant growth)
3) When space is constraint or limited, hydroponics is a good choice
4) Shorter harvest time. Since by using hydroponics, plants direct access to water instead of develop extensive root system (using soil) to find the nutrients they need.

Using this hydroponics system, it is SELF WATERING if CONNECTED TO a WATER SUPPLY SOURCE.
If not connected to water source, the plant requires WATER REPLENISHMENT between 3 to 10 days depending on the size of the plant. The planter box can be connected to a water tank which can be filled up periodically.
Planter box can be mounted
1) on the wall
2) on window sills
3) place indoors (may require light which can come in the form of LED, halogen, sodium or florescent lights)
