The Anatomy of Hair Your hair is one of the things that makes you... YOU! But not all the hair on your body is welcome all the time. Though the ages, there has been a constant struggle between our natural bodies and what we'll go through to make them fit our ideal of beauty. One of the main battlegrounds: body hair – what to leave, what to remove, how to remove it... the list goes on and on. But what exactly is hair?
The arrector pili is the muscle inside each of your follicles, attached to the bottom of the hair root. This tiny muscle can move the entire hair shaft, and it's this muscle that is responsible for your hair standing on end when you're frightened or cold. Just think of how many tiny muscles you have all over your body – one for each and every hair follicle! Perhaps the most important part of the hair root is the hair bulb, which delivers nutrients to your hair and is also the place where hair cells are formed through rapid cell division. As these new cells are formed, they move up the hair root and begin to keratinize, hardening into a protein-dense, nucleus-free material that is no longer alive by the time those cells reach the surface of the skin. The keratinization process is how nutrients from your blood become the hair that you see on your head! It's made up of 3 layers: a cuticle of overlapping cells on the outside, a cortex of proteins in the middle, and a central core of round cells on the inside. The hair shaft is 91% protein by the time you see it on your skin, and keratin is the same material your nails are made of. The nutrients that nourish your hair come to the hair bulb through the dermal papilla, which brings blood to the follicle, carrying with it the nutrients that will become your hair. It's shaped like a cone and is all the way at the bottom of the hair root, where the hair shaft begins. That's where each hair starts getting "built" until it reaches out of your skin and you can see it for yourself! At any given time, about 85% of your hair follicles are in an Anagen Phase, or growth phase, which can last 2-6 years. This is the phase that people think all hair is in all the time, where it's growing about 10 cm per year, and since it is such a long phase with such a large proportion of your hair follicles in it at once, that's not too far off-base. However, there are 2 other phases of the hair growth cycle. The Catagen Phase occurs at the tail end of the Anagen Phase, and it only lasts about 2 weeks. During this period, the hair follicle shrinks to less than 20% its normal size while the dermal papilla breaks away and the lower portion of the hair root dies off. About 10% of your hairs are in the Telogen Phase at any given time. This period is the resting phase during which the hair root takes 6 weeks to a few months of rest and hair does not grow from that follicle. The existing hair shaft stays attached and the dermal papilla remains detached and receded in the hair root. Once this phase is complete, the hair root begins the Anagen Phase again when the dermal papilla joins the base of the hair root and the entire system begins creating new cells again. As these are formed, they will push out the old hair shaft if it hasn't been shed already, and the new cells will keratinize as they make their way up the follicle so they are hair as we know it by the time it breaches the surface of the skin. Each follicle repeats this process dozens of times in throughout your life, but there are instances when hair won't necessarily grow back after the Telogen Phase. If the hair root is damaged (which is actually the goal of most epilation techniques) then thinner hair or even no hair may grow in the area. But what if there was a way to easily remove hair, with weeks of lasting results, making hair grow back thinner without the pain and expense of waxing or sugaring? |
