This cartridge does not use a smart chip so there is no microchip on this cartridge. In-stead, there is a fuse located on the front of the cartridge, which breaks at the end of the toner life, and acts as a smart chip. This simpler alternative to a smart chip still tells the printer it is out of toner and acts in a fashion so that if you take the cartridge out of the printer and re-insert it the printer will still know it is empty.
