As much as we all might like to forgo the gear choices for a classically simple single-speed drivetrain, lumpy terrain and varying trail surfaces dictate otherwise. With 11-speed cogs sometimes leaving us hanging for gears, SRAM comes to the rescue for one-by aficionados with its unprecedented 12-speed Eagle X01 drivetrain. The SRAM X01 Eagle 12-Speed BB30 Direct Mount Crankset drives forward with an updated design and tastefully understated graphics. Building on the original X-Sync chainring's chain retention ability, Eagle's X-Sync 2 chainring changes things up with features to promote yet more robust chain retention. As with the original, each tooth is CNC-machined to support the chain's inner- and outer-link widths by providing a variable thickness from tooth-to-tooth, so the chain and chainring essentially lock together and push away mud with ease. Where the original X-Sync teeth took on a boxy shape, Eagle's chainring boasts aggressively profiled teeth that hold the chain like a greedy child clutching a bag of holiday candy before letting it glide seamlessly back to the cassette for smooth, friction-free spinning. SRAM utilizes its Carbon Tuned technology to fashion the X01 Eagle arms with a proprietary carbon layup that increases stiffness where it's needed and minimizing excess material for an overall reduction in weight. In contrast to its top-tier XX1 Eagle cousin's hollow core construction, the X01 Eagle crank arms feature a foam core that adds a handful of grams to keep costs down without impacting responsiveness. The direct-mount chainring interface also affords the option of quickly subbing different rings for different shapes of terrain, allowing flexibility to adapt to the day's planned route.
