How to Use the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test

Published literature shows that urinary hCG levels in a normal pregnancy reach at least 50 mIU/ml on the day of the expected period.^3-5 If a Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test is used from the day the period is expected, it is more than 99% accurate in detecting whether or not a woman is pregnant.² This allows women to be confident in the results given by the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test.

Clearblue recognizes that one third of women test for pregnancy before they expect their period. Although Clearblue recommends that the Clearblue PLUS pregnancy test is used from the day that the period is expected, the high sensitivity of the test means that pregnancy can, in many cases, be detected up to 4 days before the expected period (that’s 5 days sooner than waiting for the day of the missed period) for women who wish to test early.

Not all pregnant women who test before the day of their expected period will obtain a 'Pregnant' result. This is because urinary hCG levels may not yet be above the threshold for the test. The likelihood that a pregnant woman will achieve a pregnant result with the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test on each early test day is given the table below².

The amount of pregnancy hormone increases rapidly in early pregnancy. In clinical testing with early pregnancy samples, the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test gave the following results:

One leading competitor product (the First Response® Early Result pregnancy test), distributed by Church & Dwight Co., Inc. claims that it can detect pregnancy as early as 6 days before the period is missed (5 days before it is expected). This has been achieved by increasing the sensitivity of the test to hCG. However, this means that the First Response® Early Result test no longer meets the industry standard of over 99% accuracy from the day of the expected period. This is because the product is sensitive enough to detect very low concentrations of hCG which may be present in non-pregnant women. Urinary hCG concentration tends to increase as women approach the menopause, such that a test which is too sensitive is prone to produce false “pregnant” results in non-pregnant women, particularly those who are peri- or post-menopausal.

The labelling for the First Response® Early Result pregnancy test states that as many as 4% of non-pregnant women aged 41–55 years the age at which many women enter the perimenopause (the stage leading up to the menopause where menstrual cycles become less regular and other menopausal symptom such as hot flashes may occur) obtained false “pregnant” results when using this product.

Clearblue does not compromise on accuracy. Although highly sensitive, the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test has been carefully developed to ensure over 99% accuracy from the day of the expected period. In addition to testing the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test’s accuracy¹in delivering both “pregnant” and “not pregnant” results from the day of the expected period, the false-positive rate of the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test was just 0.08%⁸ in a study using 300 urine samples from non-pregnant women who were pre-, peri- or postmenopausal. The thorough testing of the Clearblue PLUS Pregnancy Test during its development ensures that women can have a high level of confidence in the results it delivers, whether or not they are pregnant, and regardless of age.

A + or − result in just 3 minutes through a large results window that is designed to be easy to read. The device is also made from white laminate reflective material which provides a clear contrast against the blue lines in the Test and Control windows.
