Studio : Real Mushrooms Publisher : Real Mushrooms Binding : Health and Beauty Product Description Does Your Mushroom Products Contain Starch? Let's Find Out You might not have realized it but your mushroom product may contain some type of starch filler. This can be in the form of dextrose or maltodextrin which is a common carrier material or it can be in the form of grain. Grain is a common growing material used for many mushroom supplements which are made through a growing method called mycelium on grain. Mycelium on grain products are in fact, not made from mushroom, but fungal mycelium (the mushroom root system) grown on grain which is then dried and powdered grain and all. These products end up with a very high amount of starch from the grain that ends up in the final product so it is very important to determine whether your mushroom supplement has a high amount of starch in it or not. The 5% Mushroom Starch Rule Medicinal mushrooms generally have <5% starch so a product claiming to be made from pure mushroom should also confirm with the rule. This is where the Real Mushrooms Starch Test Kit comes in. What's is This Test Kit? This test kit allows you to perform a very simple colorimetric test to show the presence of starch in a mushroom product. It is called an iodine starch test. By adding iodine to a water solution of your mushroom product you can test for the presence of starch. If the product contains a high amount of starch the water solution will turn purple or black. You can look this up on YouTube (search "iodine starch test") for demonstrations and the science behind it. What's Included - A 25ml bottle of 2.5% iodine solution - A 5ml plastic pipette - One set of instructions. 0
