It told me to twist the base to open up the bank to get the coins out. But, later, I realized that you are supposed to pull the base out straight. Second, the plastic used in the product is extremely fragile. The base and the football coin bank are connected by two very tiny (about 2mm wide and 5mm long) stands from the football that sit into two holes onto the base to secure the bank onto the base. After 1 days, one of the stands broke off. I thought it was because my kid was abusing it when I was not watching. But then, 2 days later, I was trying to open the bank (by pulling the base out), instead of the stand being disconnected from the base, together with the football, the stand just broke off. The problem came with the operation of the bank. Putting coins in and the counter worked fine, but I wanted to test the entire bank, so I attempted to open it and get my money back out. The instructions for this process are "totally inaccurate". If you follow the written instructions you will not get into the bank. They tell you to twist the base. This is impossible. I tried just pulling on the base. It finally "popped" off the football. (The base is actually wedged onto two pegs that are part of the football.) This removed the base so I could retrieve my money, however, it also ripped the wiring from the batteries and the coin counter apart. The wiring is "extremely" thin, "cheap" would be another good word to describe them. There are two wires and each has about five micro thread size strands. I hate to return anything, so I messed with it for about an hour and was able to make a connection which I taped up with black tape. The unit works again, so I will keep it. It is going to be a gift for my Grandson. To open it without damage to the unit, you have to "pry" the base from the football. I used a butter knife stuck in gently from both ends and pried a little at a time until the base popped off. If I had done this in the beginning I wouldn't have torn the wiring apart.
