Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is known as the "universal antioxidant" because it uniquely works in both water and fat soluble parts of your cells, making it very valuable and versatile. Plus, it makes other antioxidants work better.

As you get older, your body needs more ALA than it is typically getting - making a supplement a good idea.

The problem is the ALA in most supplements isn't truly the alpha-lipoic acid your body uses. Instead it is a 50/50 mixture of two compounds: R-lipoic acid and S-Lipoic acid.

R-lipoic acid is the form that is naturally found in humans, animals and plants. It is the ALA you want. S-lipoic acid is completely unnatural - it is not found anywhere in nature. It was first chemically synthesized in a lab in 1952, and has a different biological activity than natural R-lipoic acid.

The bottom line is don't just look for ALA on a supplement label, it needs to be pure R-lipoic acid. What's more, it needs to "stabilized R-lipoic acid" to insure the ALA doesn't degrade and is bioavailable.
