Sea Monkeys
Name ONE living thing you can have in your own home that NASA had specially selected to bring along for a space mission in 1998 for nine days?
Answer: Sea Monkeys.
Sea-Monkeys are a unique species of brine shrimp. An exact, pre-blended formula of "magic crystals" and live Sea-Monkey eggs are inside the envelopes supplied in every Sea-Monkey kit. When added to water, live Sea-Monkeys will hatch. That's why anyone can get perfect results without any knowledge of chemistry or biology. Just by following the easy instructions you create Instant Life. The only "extra" is the water.
Sea-Monkeys are in no way harmful to humans or the environment. If they somehow find their way into natural water ways or sewer lines, they simply will not be able to survive outside of the formula.
Who Should Raise Sea-Monkeys?
Really, just about anyone can raise Sea-Monkeys. Their only requirement is the lack of direct sunlight, so an office space or desk drawer is perfect. Any age can appreciate the animals' beauty whether you are an adult stuck behind a desk or a kid confined to his room.
How to raise Sea-Monkeys in 3 easy steps

If you are ready to embark on your own Sea-Monkey adventure and have your kit and packets all laid out and ready, then just follow these easy instructions and you too can have your very own colony of delightful Sea-Monkeys. Be sure to aerate the tank daily during the first seven days. This is very important as it is critical that your new baby Sea-Monkeys get oxygen until they are big enough to swim to the top of the tank. If you have a
Million-Bubble Air Pump this is the safest way. Just give 10 to 15 pumps each day. If not, then you will have to aerate the old-fashioned way by pouring the water back-and-forth into a second container at least ten times. Do not over feed. Over feeding can cause bacteria to multiply in the tank and once out of control the bacteria will eat up all the oxygen from the water and your Sea-Monkeys will suffocate and die.
Using distilled (bottled) water, pour into the tank up to the level indicated. |
The water should be at room temperature . Cut open packet #1 "Water Purifier", pour the entire contents into the water and stir. |
Then stand the container safely away from direct sunlight, excess heat or cold for one day. |
24 hours later, cut open packet #2 "Instant Live Eggs", add contents to water and stir for one minute. |
Hold container up to the light and you'll see small white specks of life swimming against the current. These are your newborn pet Sea-Monkeys. More will hatch in days to come. Hatching rate depends on many factors. Some eggs hatch sooner, some hatch later. |
Keep the aquarium in shaded area away from direct sunlight. |
Five days later (not sooner), use a Sea-Monkey Feeding Spoon to add one small scoop of powder from packet #3 "Growth Food". Do not stir. |
Feed one level scoop of food from the "Sea-Monkey Feeding Spoon" once a week. NOTE: If the water gets cloudy, you are over feeding them. Do not feed again until the water turns clear. |
CHECK THE WATER LEVEL: Eventually, some water will evaporate. When down by 1.5 inches, add bottled water to the level indicated. |
1 Fill up the tank with 10 ounces of bottled or distilled water. No tap water, as it contains things poisonous to the little guys.
2 Pour in the water purifier(The packet with the 1 on it)included with the set. Leave them in a cool dry place for 24 hours.
3 Put the live sea monkey eggs into the tank, then stir very gently with the included food stick. The hatching time of the Sea-Monkeys varies depending on the place, habitat and actions of the owner. Look at the chart for hatching times depending on temperature.
4 Every 24 hours, aerate(with the Million-Bubble air pump) the tank water.or if you don't have an air pump just need a container large enough to hold all of the water and pour the sea monkey water back and forth 4-5 times.
5 After five days from adding packet #1, feed your sea monkeys growth food with the SMALL END of the food measuring spoon. You can feed them again in a week, then in another week. After that, you may feed them every other day! Try not to overfeed them as they can actually die from overfeeding. One packet of food can last up to two years. After a while, once the algae has started growing, it will produce oxygen and food for the sea monkeys, and they will be fine even if you don't feed them. This is a perfect eco-system as how it is meant to be.
What exactly is a Sea Monkey?
Sea Monkeys are a very unique species of brine shrimp. Through a lot of research scientist have unlocked the secret to their life cycle and created a formula that will keep them alive in the home environment. After all the research, testing, and crossbreeding a hybrid form of the brine shrimp, that we call the Sea Monkey, was created. With a lifespan of about 2 years, Sea Monkeys make the perfect pets. When first hatched, these tiny critters are no bigger than the period that will end this sentence, making it easy to overlook them. If you can’t see it at in the beginning, don’t throw your kit away. Give the little guy a few weeks and let him grow. After 4 weeks they will be ½ to ¾ of an inch long. At this point they will begin to reproduce, giving your more adorable sea monkeys.
