DESCRIPTION
Kutani ware is one of the most famous types of ceramic ware in Japan, and dates back to the 17th century. The porcelain style is known for its bold colors of reds, greens, purples, blues, and yellows, used to create ornate designs depicting landscapes, flowers, birds, and cultural artifacts and scenes. This sake cup depicts two mandarin ducks with very different plumages. Mandarin ducks are believed to be lifelong couples, unlike other species of ducks. As such, they are regarded as a symbol of fidelity and lifelong companionship. Also, because male and female ducks have strikingly dissimilar plumages, they are thought of as yin and yang, or an "opposites attract" couple that balance each other out by virtue of their differences.
