The maneki-neko (Japanese: 招き猫, literally "beckoning cat") is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman), usually made of ceramic in modern times, which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—often at the entrance—in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. The maneki-neko is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, or fortune cat or Buddah Kitty in English.
Maneki-neko come in different colors, styles, and degrees of ornateness. Common colors are white, black, gold and sometimes red. In addition to ceramic figurines, maneki-neko can be found as keychains, piggy banks, air fresheners, house-plant pots, and miscellaneous ornaments, as well as large statues. Maneki-neko are sometimes mistakenly called the "Chinese lucky cat", as it is also increasingly popular among Chinese merchants.
右手（前脚）を挙げている猫は金運を招き、左手（前脚）を挙げている猫は人（客）を招くとされる。両手を挙げたものもあるが、“欲張り過ぎると「お手上げ万歳」になるのが落ち”と嫌う人が多い。一般には写真のように三毛猫であるが、近年では、地の色が伝統的な白や赤、黒色の他に、ピンクや青、金色のものもあり、色によっても「学業向上」や「交通安全」（青）、「恋愛」（ピンク）など、意味が違う。黒い猫は、昔の日本では『夜でも目が見える』等の理由から、「福猫」として魔除けや幸運の象徴とされ、黒い招き猫は魔除け厄除けの意味を持つ。また、赤色は疱瘡や麻疹が嫌う色、といわれてきたため、赤い招き猫は病除けの意味を持つ。
招财猫（日文：招き猫 英文：Lucky cat）起源于日本，是日本传统文化中常见的猫型偶像摆设，被视为一种招财招福的吉祥物，其历史可以追溯到四百多年前的江户。通常采用陶瓷制作，一般为白色，形态为其中一手高举至头顶，作出向人招来的手势。一般招财猫举左手表示招福；举右手则寓意招财；两只手同时举起，就代表“财”和“福”一起到来的意思。此外，招财猫胸前挂着的金铃，也有开运、招财、招福、缘起之意。不同颜色的招财猫代表了主人不同的愿望，表达了人类亘古不变的对幸福、美满、好运的希冀。
