SEPT AND RELATED NAMES include: Balneaves, Dinsmore, Dunsmore, Fleming, Moray, Murrie, Piper, Rattray, Smaill, Spalding. Descended from a Flemish nobleman, the clan was granted lands in Moray, in the north of Scotland. They became firmly identified with the cause of Scotland's freedom, with the clan chief Sir Andrew Murray fighting a the side of William Wallace at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, while Sir George Murray was Lieutenant General of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite army during the 1745 Rising.
