Coffee is as important to Italy as oxygen, and the morning ritual of sitting down to a steaming hot caffè latte is rivalled only by the mid afternoon espresso shot at a favourite bar.
Virtually every Italian family owns a MOKA POT, a coffee maker that is simple and economical.
The classic Italian design of the MOKA POT is world famous and has become synonymous with Italian living and la dolce vita.
Forget the high tech coffee machines that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Make coffee at home the Italian way with the iconic MOKA POT.
Each MOKA POT makes 1-2 espresso shots.
Instructions:
Fill the base with water until the water level reaches (but does not exceed) the bottom of the round safety valve.
Place the filter over the opening of the base and add ground coffee powder (NOT instant coffee powder). Pack with a spoon; it is fine if the coffee powder rises a few centimetres over the edge of the filter.
Screw together the base and the top half of the moka pot tightly. If the two halves are not screwed together tightly enough, coffee will seep out.
Place the moka pot on the stove and heat over a low fire. For best results, use the weakest heat settings available.
Once you hear a bubbling noise or see steam emerge from the moka pot, remove from the heat immediately.
Pour the coffee out through the spout and add warm milk if desired.
PLEASE NOTE: Before using your moka pot for the first time, please make coffee following the above instructions TWICE and then discard the coffee without drinking in order to give the device a thorough cleaning. Clean your moka pot with a soft sponge/brush and hot water. Never use detergent to clean your moka pot as the coffee oils enhance the flavour of your brews.
SAFETY NOTE: Only use the moka pot in accordance with the instructions above. Filling the base with too much water, forgetting to put the filter in place or using the moka pot in any other way other than the method prescribed above can result in serious injury.
To make an ESPRESSO, simply pour the coffee into an espresso shot glass and enjoy.
To make a CAFFÈ LATTE, pour the coffee into a cup and add 2 parts milk to 1 part coffee.
