Makunouchi bento came about in the 17th century in Japan. The term "makunouchi" means "between acts". During intermissions for a noh or kabuki theater performance， meals in this type of bento box were served to guests. This rectangular box contains five compartments. The compartments are different sizes to allow for an appealing and balanced presentation of different types of food.
