Shocking health hazards of the haze on skin
The haze should have little effect on healthy skin, said Dr Steven Thng, consultant dermatologist at the National Skin Centre. Those with eczema - "asthma of the skin" - may find it becoming itchy and inflamed, he said. Using moisturiser three to four times a day can help protect the skin.
However, the haze causes the skin - a barrier between environmental pollutants and the body - to be overwhelmed, such that those with no history of skin ailments can also develop skin problems, said Dr Lynn Chiam, a dermatologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
She said: "The haze, dust and dirt in the air can clog pores and lead to pimples. Long-term exposure to pollution can irritate the skin, leading to dry, rough skin and a rash." "In addition, air pollution increases the production of free radicals (toxic by-products of oxygen) in the skin, which damage cells in the body. Prolonged exposure to air pollution can cause wrinkles and premature skin ageing."
"Healthy people should apply moisturiser on their skin to improve its barrier function. Using moisturiser regularly - at least twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening - can prevent skin from drying and reduce itch."
"Avoid using harsh soap, which can further damage the skin barrier." 10 years of Eczema
Hi, I’ve had suffer eczema for 10 years on my hands, body and legs, over the years I tried every prescription medicine that multiple skin doctors gave me but most of them have steroids in them. I also tried treatment from TCM and to the extend I switch diet to be vegetarian. The skin condition did not neither improved nor better.
