I wanted something to challenge her so I got her the Hot Dots Grade 3 reading set. It has been really great for her. She loves all of the challenges and even the advanced challenges and it is putting her a step above the other students in her class. I wish there was a way to hook up headphones, but otherwise we love everything about it. Great resource for good readers and those who need to improve. They work on Reading Comprehension, Synonyms & Antonyms, Homophones & Multiple-meaning Words, Context Clues, Spelling, and Punctuation & Grammar. I have two third grade boys who spent about 30 minutes playing with Hot Dots Math and Hot Dots Reading the first time we tried the product. They loved using the "pen" and the comments of encouragement amused them. One kind of raced through the math book to find the problem he considered fun (more challenging). The other just worked through the books page by page, occasionally skipping something he thought was "boring," because it was something he'd mastered, or too challenging. I think the books reflect the third grade curriculum very well. The next time we went to use them, they were less interested because they said it felt too much like extra homework. But when I insisted, because I wanted them to get more practice in the areas where they could use some help, they enjoyed the process. I would recommend these products as learning tools, but I would not present them as "toys" or a "game" to third graders because, at least with mine, they think I'm tricking them into just doing work. I want them to be accelerated learners. With the help of Hot Dots I can help my child master skills at home without them feel like I am tutoring them or forcing them to learn more. Hot Dots makes learning fun. They say that child digress during summer breaks. Hot Dots is going to be a great tool to help my children retain their learning and skills during the summer months. I want them to go back to school remembering what they learned the previous year. The 3rd grade math teaches fractions, time, geometry, beginning algebra, and so much more. I love seeing the pleased look on my child's face when the pen give positive reinforcement.
