Excessive free radicals or cellular oxidative load may lead to tissue damage which is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases. To cope with this, our body needs protective endogenous antioxidant enzymes as well as exogenous dietary antioxidants.

Natural Vitamin E, d-alpha-Tocopherol is the most important dietary antioxidant. However, the amount of Vitamin E can be several thousand fold less than the free radicals or cellular oxidative load. This requires Vitamin E to be recycled to continuously prevent oxidation.

Selenium naturally recycles the antioxidant Vitamin E, through activation of the principal protective endogenous antioxidant enzymes.
