HEMA means……

HEMA” mean “the black horse” in Chinese (traditional Chinese: 黑馬). From around a thousand years ago, the Ancient Tea Route was a trade link from Yunnan, one of the first tea-producing regions: to Bengal via Burma; to Tibet; and to central China via Sichuan Province. Horses played an important role to carried heavy loads of tea. It is believed that it was through this trading network that tea first spread across China and Asia from its origins in Pu-erh County, near Simao Prefecture in Yunnan. The route earned the name Tea-Horse Road because of the common trade of Tibetan ponies for Chinese tea, a practice dating back at least to the Song dynasty, when the sturdy horses were important for China to fight warring nomads in north. The Tea Horse Road of Chamadao (traditional Chinese: 茶馬道), now generally referred to as the Ancient Tea Horse Road or Chamagudao (traditional Chinese: 茶馬古道) was a network of caravan paths winding through the mountains of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou in Southwest China. It is also sometimes referred to as the Southern Silk Road.

Introduction of Puer Tea

Puer Tea (also commonly known as ‘Pu-erh’, ‘Pu’er’, ‘Pu-er’, ‘Po Lei’, ‘Bolay’, ‘Dark Tea’ or ‘Black Tea’ in China) is China’s great treasures and has only recently been discovered in the West. Puer Tea is a special tea variety which has its origins in the Chinese province of Yunnan. This tea variety has a long history that can be traced as far as the far as the Han Dynasty, starting with year 202 BCE. Puer Tea undergoes a very process of fermentation and maturation, which is considered to be China’s unique production style.

Puer Tea is made from the leaves of large-leaf Yunnan tea trees (Dayeh). There are 2 type of Puer Tea, Raw Puer (ShengPuer) and Ripe Puer (Shou Puer). Sheng Puer is made from the minimally processed leaves of the large-leaf Yunnan tea tree, and then carefully aged under supervised conditions before it is consumed. This style of Puer is often aged for 15 or 20 years, and can be aged for much longer for a deeper, richer, smother, more complex flavor.

Shou processing involves the application of heat and moisture, as well as the inoculation of the tealeaves with beneficial bacteria. It takes about a year for harvested tealeaves to become 'ripened' or 'finished' Puer. Some 'ripened' Puer are also aged for a flavor more similar to traditionally produced Puer.
