NO FAN: Our bulbs do not use a fan - exposure to dust, water and salt contribute to degradation and ultimate failure of the fan. Once the fan fails, the bulb quickly burns itself out by overheating the LED, or the bulb automatically goes into half power mode, significantly reducing light output. Either way, your bulbs need to be replaced. Even in enclosed housings the fan can fail. Also, most fan bulbs are too deep and protrude out too far to fit many housings.
NO FINS: Fins have no moving parts which prevent premature breakage, but most bulbs with fins don''t have enough of them to dissipate heat from high powered LEDs, so they lack output. Higher powered LED bulbs with fins only, end up using so many fins that the size of the bulb is too deep to fit most enclosed housings and are too wide to make installation easy. Also the fins are rarely fused to the bulb housing. This means inefficient heat dissipation.
Braided Belt: The belt design is perfect for a bulb in this application for a number of reasons. It has no moving parts and cannot fail or turn off like a fan. A braided belt can be packed tightly for installation and then spread out into the housing once installed. The area of a belt is far greater than fins. We have 4 belt loops with 16 surfaces (each side of each loop strap piece) totaling over 30in'2 area.
We use a copper core, which is a soft metal and an excellent heat conductor, and fuse the belt to the core by overlapping it by over 1/2 an inch. This unifies the metals and allows heat to travel right up the belt from the copper. This cannot be achieved with 2 pieces of aluminum, which has poor conductivity for heat, or with aluminum and stainless that is not fused.
