Notes from Editorial & Food Director, Pamela Clark
1) Reduce your kilojoule/ calorie intake for just 2 days a week and still lose weight! Join the scores of people who have discoered the best way of dieting- eating less for just two daysa week while eating normally on the other days. You'll find that after you've done this calorie restriction or 'fast' diet (2100kj/ 500 calories for women and 2500kj/ 600 calories for men) for serveral weeks it becomes routine. The weight slowly comes off, and you begin to feel and look better, and you won't want to over-indulge on your regular eating days. And, of course, a little bit of exercise goes a long way to keeping the weight off and starting on the journey o a fit and healthy lifestyle.

2) Cafe food is fast becoming the way we eat now- not only in cafes but at home, too. We're just as likely to eat BLT or frittata for dinner these days as we are a traditional main meal. This book shows how to duplicate the simple, unfussy food we love so much in cafes. There are breakfasts, like french toast, bircher muesli, poached egg and smoked salmon on blini; main meals such as salads, crab cakes, cheeseburgers, chowder and club sandwiches and, of course, those cakes, biscuits and desserts we love- biscotti, brownies, mud cake and chocolate tart.

3) Decorating cakes can be really simple but effective, incredibly complicated but divine and everything in between - and this is where this book is positioned. If you're a newcomer to cake decorating, be sure to read all the information pages at the back of the book before you start. if you become fascinated by this subject, do some classes and you will be amazed at how quickly you'll be able to do all kinds of beautiful cakes. We start off with easy cakes, requiring little or no skills, moving through to slightly more complicated ones. The biggest barrier to most people is using ready-made icing - once you've mastered this icing, you're well on the way to becoming an expert.

4) No one knows cakes better than The Australian Women's Weekly Test Kitchen. In this collection there are chocolate cakes, syrups cakes, sponge cakes, fruit cakes, tea cakes, nut rolls, muffins, slices, friands and crumble cakes. As always with Women's Weekly cake books, there is useful information about cake pans, baking equipment and oven temperatures, and there are step-by-step shots to help as well.

5) The Australian Women's Weekly is renowned for its cake, biscuit and slice recipes. They're carefully developed and tested at least three times to make sure they'll emerge perfect from any oven. Included in this beautiful book are fabulous chocolate, nut, fruit and sponge cakes; biscuits that will disappear almost as soon as they're cool; and slices that no one will be able to resist.

6) The Australian Women's Weekly's Children's Birthday Cake Book was first published in 1980 and has sold more than half a million copies. While it has been out of print for many years we still get requests for it, often from mothers who remember the cakes from their own childhood. In response, we had pulled this book out of our archives to reprint it once again. So here it is, 30 years after it first appeard in newsagents throughout the country - the vintage edition of " the cake book with the train on the cover". We have had to make a minor change - four of your little friends are missing from its pages. but they've been replaced by other cakes you'll love just as much. Apart from that we've left it just as it was - a true collector's cookbook especially for you.

7) New Asian food is Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Japanese. It's not that the food is new, just new to Westerners. It's fresh, cimple and best of all - fast. Ingredients that were once uncommon in our greengrocers and supermarkets - lemon grass, coriander, plam sugar, limes - are now almost mainstream. And Asian food is so inviting, so healthy and fresh, it's no wonder it's become as ubiquitous as spag bol.

8) Sweet things are what we like to cook most of all The Australian Women's Weekly Test Kitchen. Over the last 80 years, we have built up quite a reputation for producing fabulous recipes - all of which are triple- tested for sure-fire success every time. This book is delightful collection of recipes that really show off what can be done with basic ingredients and delicious seasonal fruits. the recipes include tarts, cakes and biscuits, all in an amazing variety of shapes, sizes (we even have a chapter called 'mouthfuls') and flavours. And then there are desserts, all of which have an incredibly high 'wow' factor. So, make a cup of tea or coffee, flick through the book and decide what you're going to bake first.

9) Tapas, antipasto and mezze are all little treats to serve with drinks. Tapas come from Spain, antipasto from Italy and mezze from Greece and the Middle East. These tasty bites will be winners at any gathering, whether it's having friends over for a casual get together, or for a more elegant cocktail party. Whether it's sausage, prawns, scallops, fritters, pastries, dips, skewered meats, chicken or deep-fried vegetables, these delicious little morsels are sure to be a big hit.
