The system was derived from the PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) System utilizing a standard webbing ladder system providing a framework for affixing modular pouches allowing soldiers to customize their packs, weapons cases, etc. Today, MOLLE is used generally to describe all systems and subsystems that utilize a webbing system for modular pouch attachment. The webbing system forms the foundational framework for the MOLLE system.
