History From the wild mustangs of Spanish descent, a unique color pattern arose, a combination of white and various contrasting colors. The American Paint Horse Association got its official start in 1962, in the kitchen of a paint aficionado. Along with bloodline requirements, the breed standard includes specific requirements for color, one color contrasting with white, and prescribed zones for the color.
