Eating a serving of whole grains, at least 6 times each week is an especially good idea for people with high cholesterol, high blood pressure or other signs of heart diseases. According to the American Heart Journal, those eating at least 6 servings of whole grains each week experienced slowed progression of plaque build-up that narrows the vessels through which blood flows, and less progression in narrowing of the diameter of arterial passageways. Whole grains also offer special benefits in promoting healthy blood sugar control. Whole grains such as brown rice and millet are a rich source of magnesium. Magnesium has been shown in studies to reduce asthma and to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. Magnesium has also been shown to lower high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests barley’s fibre has multiple beneficial effects on cholesterol. Barley’s dietary fibre provides food for the “friendly” bacteria in the large intestine which to maintain a healthy colon.
