Stainless steel is protected protected from rusting by a layer of chromium oxide (one of the characteristics of stainless steel and why we use it so much in the kitchen). Pls note heavy clenasing solutions can cause rusting. Bleach can strip away the protective chromium oxide layer and leave the steel below exposed to the elements, especially if left to dry on its own. Additionally, stainless steel with less chromium content (which is to say, cheaper stainless steel) is more vulnerable to rusting.Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does, but despite the name it is not fully stain-proof, most notably
under low oxygen, high salinity, or poor circulation environments.There are different grades of Stainless Steel (304, 316 and other higher grades. 304 is the lowest and COULD rust. Stainless steels don't like chlorides, either so you could see some rusting but they should all be better than "mild" steel which will rust readily, especially with salt water.
