| Besides serving one of the most delicious Bak Kut Teh and other Chinese cuisines, Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh is a business of second chances. It was started in April 2013 with staff mainly consisting of ex-offenders (90% of our staff strength are from ex-offenders), as Soon Huat embraces a vision to give ex-offenders and former drug-abusers a second chance to begin their lives anew with a meaningful career. Many of the staff in Soon Huat were hard-core criminals. Some are homeless, some have been involved in robbery and theft, whilst others participated in drug trafficking. Yet they share the same goal; to break away from their past destructive lifestyles and to start over. In Soon Huat they discover their chance to achieve that goal. THE FOUNDER/MAIN CHEF The founder/main chef of Soon Huat is himself an ex-convict. He was inspired by the transformed lives of other ex-convicts, together with a strong determination to change his life after 13 years of regular prison sentences, due to drug related offences. Therefore, he gave himself a second chance during his last term in prison. Having started as a kitchen porter in Changi prison with no former training of any kind, Soon Huat's founder soon became the main chef, due to his outstanding cooking skills. Recently, Soon Huat has become more than the average, everyday business. It is a place where people can come and enjoy the owner's authentic Bak Kut Teh recipe alongside the reality of hopeless lives transformed. " |
