Magnesium can be obtained through your diet from various foods. However, most people in the U.S. probably do not get as much magnesium as they should from their diet. Foods rich in magnesium include whole grains, nuts, and green vegetables such as chlorophyll and green leafy vegetables, which are particularly high in magnesium. The most bioavailable forms of Magnesium are magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate, with MD Logic’s Magnesium providing the latter.
Magnesium is one of the body’s most vital minerals. In fact, in plays an essential role in over 300 different enzymatic reactions in the body. Its primary functions include but are not limited to energy metabolism by breaking down and oxidizing glucose, carbohydrates, fat and proteins, regulating calcium-triggered contractions of the heart and muscle, supporting vasodilation of the blood vessels, nervous system function by controlling the movement of ions through ion channels in the nerve membranes. Together with calcium and phosphorus, magnesium also plays an important role in bone growth and helps prevent tooth decay by holding calcium in tooth enamel.
Magnesium’s most important role is that of helping the smooth muscles to relax. When calcium flows into the muscle tissue cells, the muscle contracts. When calcium leaves and magnesium replaces it, the muscle relaxes, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance and promoting a healthy cardiovascular system.
