These are thick and somewhat loud, but not bothersome to me (like the sound of a waterproof crib pad--crinkly). When fully zipped, it holds air like a balloon, so you can compress your pillow and zip to really stiffen/tighten your pillow temporarily (air eventually seeps in). But also when your head hits pillow, it's like a balloon slowly deflating. You could leave zipper undone an inch to prevent this.
