Sobakawa Buckwheat Husk Pillow

Background of Buckwheat Pillow

The earliest evidence of buckwheat pillow use has been found in ancient Egypt. Traders with Egypt from the Orient then introduced them to Japan and other eastern cultures where they have been popular for 2 - 3 thousand years. Highly decorated versions of them were even used as currency from time to time in that area. About 30 years or so ago they were introduced into Canada, and more recently they have started to become popular in the US.

In Japan, with Buckwheat noodle or Soba being a major part of their diet, there is a huge abundance of the the Buckwheat Husk or Sobakawa. And it was found out by the Japanese by the replacing of the fillings in the pillow with the Buckwheat Husk or Sobakawa, they have discovered the perfect pillow which conformed to the shape of their head and neck yet offering great support.

As of today, usage of the Buckwheat or Sobakawa Pillow is popularly used in the common households to the luxury hotel chains in Japan.

Q & A

Q. Buckwheat pillows, what are they?

A.  In simple terms, a buckwheat pillow is a pillow that is filled with buckwheat hulls, rather than feathers, down, vinyl foam, or fiber.

Q.  What are buckwheat hulls?

A.  They are the hard protective covering of the buckwheat fruit or berry. Buckwheat is thought of, and used, as a grain, but it really is a fruit, and surprisingly, is most closely related to the rhubarb plant. The fruits are loften dried and ground into flour, from which we make buckwheat pancakes. Sometimes the fruits are toasted and made into something called "kasha". This can be cooked as a cereal, or in soups and stews.
The hulls, or husks, are then triple vacuumed to remove any trace of flour or other debris, and then rolled flat in preparation for being used as buckwheat pillow filling. Hulls that do not undergo the vacuuming and rolling processes may also be used as garden mulch among other uses.

Q.  Why buckwheat filling?

A.  The natural filling has many advantages over conventional fiberfill, foam, or feather fillings. The most important quality for the relief of pain is that the material conforms to the exact contours of the head and neck providing a compliant passive support. This means that you have the same amount of support in all areas minimizing the stress on all areas of support. Other filling materials which compress, try to recover their original shape and this puts stress on the muscles of the neck. Other advantages of the buckwheat hull filling are the "cool in the summer, warm in the winter" insulating properties, the ability to adjust the size to your individual needs by removing or adding back filler so the pillow fits you just right. The filling also lasts for many years making the pillow the best value cervical pillow on the market. Long after other pillows have collapsed and worn out a buckwheat hull pillow will still be fully functional. Buckwheat hull pillows are also environmentally friendly - for each pillow put to use it will save the manufacturing of the synthetic filling for ten or more ordinary pillows.

Q.   I am allergic to wheat and grain, can I still use the buckwheat pillow?

A.
Buckwheat hulls are not a grain like wheat, they are a fruit. Hulls are Hypo-allergenic and very few people are allergic to buckwheat hull pillows.

Q.   Who should use buckwheat pillow?

A.
Buckwheat pillows are commonly prescribed by chiropractors for the relief of neck pain, back pain, headache, muscle tension, snoring and other sleep conditions.
