The first time we tried to use the nails in the kit. The nails are very tiny and hard to use. The nails also bent (even when the leaders tried, let alone the boys). I took home the kits to drill pilot holes for the nails, but a 1/16 drill is too big for the nails and I couldn't find a smaller size at the store. The next time we tried to put them together we used glue (liquid nails clear seal and stik'n seal outdoor adhesive# both glues are weather proof and say they dry in about 5 minutes. I found both at Wal-Mart in the hardware section with the superglue and caulking. Both glues worked well. The bird houses are very tiny. I think they are worth the $2.50 through walmart but not worth the $12 from the other site through walmart because of how small they are. Also the house is not symmetrical. Make sure you flip the front door and the back of the house so they line up when you put it together. Also one roof is a little wider because of the non symmetry so use it on the edge which is longer. If you look at the bird house as a square it is close to 3" x a little less than 3". Its about 5 1/2" long but a lot of that is the perch that sticks out. I didn't think any birds would be small enough to fit in it but my husband said their are a few small birds like starlings that could. I would make these kits again with the cub scouts using the glue method not the nails. I put wax paper under their bird houses while the boys worked on them so we wouldn't ruin the table or have a bird house permanently stuck to the table. Hope this helps. Was this review helpful?Yes (18)No (1)Reportgood for gluing only3/8/2017Average rating:2out of5stars, based onreviews3/8/2017by DebT ?Verified purchaserThese were smaller than I thought, but very cute. The tiny nails in the kit split the wood every time- you cannot use nails. We purchased them for summer camp where the kids wanted to "build" something, so we were disappointed that hammers could not be used. We put them together with tacky glue and they went together well. Was this review helpful?Yes (0)No (0)ReportRead all reviews
