NOW modified the source of Cinnamon due to a shortage of Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon), the species previously used in this product. While verum Cinnamon is in short supply, another species, Cinnamomum cassia, is readily available. We tested samples of Cinnamomum cassia and it met all our stringent safety and efficacy requirements for cinnamon raw material. Instead of discontinuing this product, we decided to switch to Cinnamomum cassia until a reliable quality supply of Cinnamomum verum is available again. NOW's thorough analyses of available Cinnamomum cassia allayed concerns over coumarin and cinnamaldehyde content, as these two compounds are present at very low levels and are not a cause for concern based on recent studies and current safety data. Furthermore, Cinnamomum cassia has been better studied for its potential effect on glucose management, a benefit not consistently found using Cinnamomum verum.
