Betel Life: Brand Story Native Taiwan Born in Taiwan, the Taiwan Culture brings up "Betel Life." We insist on the selection of natural materials in Taiwan and combine the aboriginal culture. We took them from hometown, and hope the hometown to be rewarded because of them. Therefore, we innovate new products on the basis of eco-awareness and humanistic concern and embrace ecology with the modesty of reuse. About Betel Palm The history of betel cultivation has been more than 30 years in Taiwan. The major cultivation areas are Nantou(南投), Pingtung(屏東), Chiayi(嘉義), and Hualien(花蓮). It accompanied Taiwan to go through social changes and generation alternation. In traditional trading patterns, the betel nuts were the most valuable part of betel and the falling betel leaves were regarded as waste. However, in recent years, owing to the current of environmental conservation, the slogan "Cut betel palms, then reforest " came out. It results in a large number of betel palms felled. However, it takes decades to reconstruct and repair and might cause secondary damage to the environment. "Betel Life" rethinks the possibilities of the balance between betel palms and ecological environment. As a result, we tried to define the new value of betel palms from the perspective of recycling. A Breakthrough: New Materials from Falling Leaves The betel leaves wither two times a year. They contain "arecoline" that has antibacterial and deodorant function. Besides, the leaves could be shaped with moisture and heat. After processing without any anticorrosion and coating, they could be made as natural slippers with spontaneous decomposition. In addition to the surface of slippers were all cut from the natural betel leaves, the base were made by mixture of betel leaves pounders and balata. We try to give rebirth to the value of betel palms and create jobs for farmers at the same time. We dedicate ourselves to take from hometown and reward to it. That's our motivation of building this brand. The betel leaves wither two times a year. That's our motivation of building this brand. Cultural and Creative Inspiration The betel palm is an important crop to aborigines in Taiwan. It stands for status and holy sacrifice to Taiwan's aborigines. Therefore, betel palms have profound relationships with Taiwan Aboriginal Culture. Betel Life actively contacts with Atayal(泰雅族) who are the best weaving specialists, and invite them to weave the symbols of the "patron saint eye" on behalf of the ancestral spirits- a diamond totem as the main pattern on slippers. Because of the creating processes, the original betel slippers combining with guardian mythology become unique products. We sincerely hope to share the value of reuse to the world and present efforts for Taiwanese culture.
