The pomegranate originated in the region of modern-day Iran and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean and northern India. Pomegranates are rich in nitrates, antioxidants and vitamin C, and have long been known as good sources of essential nutrients. Pomegrantates in particular care heavy with phenolic molecules such as ellagic acid and quercetin, as well as polyphenolic compounds such as tannins.
