Guide to Getting a Helmet

Safety first
While you won’t break the law if you don’t wear one in Singapore, traffic police advise that all cyclists should wear a suitable protective bicycle helmet to prevent serious head injuries if you fall. Read up on more safety tips by the Singapore Road Safety Council.

Finding a good fit
All bike helmets are sized according to head circumference. To get the correct measurements, use a soft tape measure and wrap it around your child’s head just above the eyebrows. Helmets are too tight if your child feels pressure at the temples, and is too loose if it wobbles even after you’ve adjusted the straps.

Important features
A good helmet should have an adjustable cranial band that tightens at the back of the head to provide better stability. Choose those that have removable linings so they can be easily washed (and prevent sweat from creating a lingering odour). Look for one that has air vents as well to combat our humidity. Front visors are not necessary as they may block your child’s vision, but most are easily detachable.

Weight is also a key factor in ensuring comfort and ease. Lightweight ones are recommended for toddlers. For preschoolers, helmets with adjustable chinstraps are advisable. A dual-certified helmet will be useful if your kids are also into skateboarding.
