Tip from our mummy tester: It's a lot easier to apply lubricant, moisturiser or gel on the tummy when using the doppler for the first time as it makes it much easier to listen to the heart beat. She could easily find and hear clearly and distinctly within 30seconds. There after you can go without the gels, and still hear the heart beat, but will be a little more faint. She used it when she was 15 weeks along. The moisturing gel she used was those cheap aloe vera gel as shown in the photo below.
