What is obesity?
Simply put, obesity results when calorie intake is greater than the body’s energy expenditure.

What causes obesity?

There are various complex factors and it is impossible to accurately pinpoint the cause of obesity. Although genetic disposition is one of them, the key cause of obesity is unhealthy dietary habits such as eating foods high in calories.

Age is another factor. As people get older, they need less calories but tend to not change their dietary habits. This is especially true of middle-aged people who enjoy relatively higher income, more social activities but less physical activity. They become obese due to decreased metabolism rates and the daily accumulation of excess calories.

How does obesity threaten health?
Obesity is a warning sign of declining health. Statistics show that obesity featured prominently in many diseases of the past and will become the main health bane of modern society. Obesity has many adverse health effects such as a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, and lung, skin and joint problems. In addition, research has shown that obesity is the main cause of chronic diseases! Due to this close link between obesity and chronic diseases, scholars and experts have even referred to obesity, diabetes, hypertension and arteriosclerosis as the New World Syndrome or the deadly quartet of the metabolic syndrome. Hence, obesity is the killer of modern man’s health.

Can I get cancer or heart disease if I am overweight?
The American Cancer Society says that overweight or obese post-menopausal women face higher risk of cancers such as breast cancer, colon cancer, gallbladder cancer and kidney cancer. The American Heart Association reports that people who weigh more than 30% over their ideal body weight are more likely to develop heart disease even if they do not have other risk factors like smoking or diabetes. This is because the extra weight puts a strain on the heart and increases blood pressure and cholesterol.

Is there a standard criterion to assess my weight?
Yes. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is currently the more recognized standard evaluation criterion. It is easy and convenient, requiring only height and weight measurements as per the formula:

Your BMI = Your weight (kg) ÷ your height (meters) ÷ your height (meters)

If your BMI is

Asians less than 18.5 18.5 – 22.9 23 – 27.4 27.5 and above
Caucasians less than 18.5 18.5 – 24.9 25 – 29.9 30 and above
You are Underweight healthy overweight obese
For example, if your weight is 70kg and your height is 1.65m, your BMI is 25.7 (overweight).

2. Keep a food diary to track what you eat and why you overeat.
3. Ensure your three main meals are balanced.

How safe are the natural slimming teas on the market?
There is a plethora of slimming products on the market. However, many have side effects. Although many slimming teas are marketed as natural, they contain stimulants such as caffeine and ma huang (Ephedra). The caffeine is hidden in the form of tea leaves or other plants that are high in caffeine. Intake of such products will cause side effects such as heart palpitations, insomnia, headache, high blood pressure and gastric ulcers. Some slimming teas contain diuretics to promote excretion of water. The weight will bounce back once you stop taking these products. In serious cases, these products may even cause kidney failure.

Do government-approved diet drugs have side effects?
Yes. Diet drugs such as Diethylpropion, Phendimetrazine and Phentermine suppress appetite. As they stimulate the central nervous system, common side effects include giddiness, headaches, insomnia, anxiety and nervousness. Some diet drugs, such as chitosan, interfere with intestinal or fat absorption. Their side effects include constipation, bloating and stomachache.

Is the Atkins diet effective?
The Atkins diet is high in animal protein. It emphasizes high meat intake and low intake of vegetables, fruits and carbohydrates. It relies on low intake of carbohydrates to burn fats. However, this diet is very unhealthy as it is high in cholesterol and may cause serious damage to the circulatory system. Other side effects include constipation, diarrhea, bad breath, headache and fatigue. The high protein intake places a heavy burden on the kidneys, changes the acid levels in the body, and leaches calcium from bones, thereby harming skeletal health.

Why do I gain weight even when I only eat fruits?
Even fruits have calories. Fruits that are sweeter usually have higher calories. A medium-size mango has about 140 calories. Hence a fruits-only diet may not be able to help you achieve your weight loss goals. More importantly, eating only fruits at each meal is unhealthy because the protein and other basic nutrients in fruits are insufficient for daily nutrition requirements.

Why may eating salads cause weight gain?
Many salad dressings, such as Thousand Island Dressing and mayonnaise, are made from salad oil and egg yolks, both of which are high in calories and cholesterol. Frequent consumption of salads with salad dressings may not lead to weight loss; it may even harm the cardiovascular system.

Does 1-Shape contain cholesterol?

What is a healthy weight loss goal?
Healthy weight loss occurs slowly and steadily. Aim to lose 0.5 to 1 kilogram a week. To do this, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories each day, through a low-calorie diet and regular exercise.

For example, if you are a 31-year-old female office worker with an inactive lifestyle, you would need about 1,800 calories daily to maintain your weight. To lose 0.5 to 1 kilogram per week, you would need to reduce your daily calorie intake by 500 to 1,000 calories or burn off this number of calories through exercise daily.

What are the benefits of soy?
Soy is an excellent source of plant protein. Adequate protein intake is very important when on a low-calorie diet, so that muscle loss can be prevented.

Muscle burns more calories than fat does. The more muscle you have in relation to fat, the higher your metabolic rate. When on a low-calorie diet, not eating enough to build or maintain muscles will result in less muscle available to continue to burn calories.

Soy protein stands out among all plant proteins for its benefits to human health. The highly nutritious soy has twice as much protein as meat, four times that of chicken eggs and 12 times that of cow’s milk. Besides, it contains calcium, folic acid, fiber, vitamins and phytochemicals. Soy is also low in fat, cholesterol-free and high in fiber.

Soy isoflavones help lower cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. They can also help prevent osteoporosis.

What are the benefits of American ginseng?
Fatigue and a weakened immune system are commonly encountered when one is on a low-calorie diet or in the midst of changing diets.

Nutritional Immunology research shows that American ginseng is an excellent adaptogen—an herb that helps the body adapt to fatigue, stressful conditions and changing temperatures.

American ginseng can energize when the body experiences tiredness, and tranquilize when the body is under stress. By regulating the body’s production of stress hormones and protecting the hippocampus from the effects of stress hormones, the substances in American ginseng reduce stress reactions greatly. Ginsenosides such as Rb1 can help the body to cope with stress and increase rates of learning.

American ginseng is also packed with fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, vitamin C, and B-vitamins.

What are the benefits of fiber?
Many people who are dieting often suffer from constipation due to inadequate fiber intake. But there is more to fiber than preventing constipation. Fiber is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system.

Fiber also aids weight control. In the stomach, it expands and forms a gel-like consistency when it absorbs the water we drink. Besides taking up more space, it delays the rate at which foods leave the stomach. This makes us feel full for a longer duration, thus helping to curb appetite.

It adds water and volume to feces, promoting bowel movement. Made up of aucubine, enzymes, fats and mucilage, it reduces blood cholesterol levels, controls the rise of blood sugar levels and prevents heart disease and diabetes.

What are the benefits of 1-Shape’s unique packaging?
1-Shape is meant for consumption before meals. Each aluminum bottle contains 2 packages of 1-Shape. This travel-friendly packaging spells convenience as you do not need a cup. The lightweight packaging of 1-Shape caters to modern lifestyle needs.

How should 1-Shape be taken?
Take out the 2 packages in the bottle. Mix 1 package with lukewarm/cold water in bottle. Fill up to ¾ full and screw cap on tightly. Shake well. Drink immediately. Take 1 package before lunch and dinner.

Why must I consume 1-Shape immediately?
1-Shape is high in fiber; leaving it for a while before drinking may cause a thickening of the mixture.

Why does 1-Shape come in a box of 7 bottles containing 2 sachets each?
We need at least 7 days to obtain optimal benefits from effective weight management. Hence a box of 1-Shape is conveniently packaged for one week’s consumption. It is recommended that you take a bottle containing 2 sachets daily. This is also why 1-Shape is not sold by individual sachets or bottles. The bottle is designed to be light and travel-friendly so that you can enjoy high nutrition and effective weight management on the go.

Isn’t it more economical to provide 1 instead of 7 aluminum bottles in each box of 1-Shape?
It is unhygienic to reuse the aluminum bottle for a week. In view of this, we have chosen aluminum bottles because they are eco-friendly and fully recyclable.

Is drinking out of an aluminum bottle safe?
The aluminum bottle is perfectly safe as it has an internal lining to separate the aluminum from the bottle’s contents.

Is 1-Shape suitable for diabetics?
1-Shape contains many fruits and vegetables; these naturally contain fructose. Hence, it is recommended that diabetics consult a licensed physician first before consuming 1-Shape.

Is 1-Shape suitable for children?
Yes. 1-Shape is made from wholesome plant foods and is ideal for young and old alike. Letting children consume 1-Shape is like providing them with fiber-rich foods. It is not recommended for children under the age of one as their gastrointestinal tracts may not tolerate fiber well.

The Skinny On Weight Loss
Your weight loss questions answered

Why do I gain weight even though I eat the same amount of food daily?
It is not the amount of food but the number of calories in foods that count towards weight management. As long as calorie intake is more than the energy used daily, there will be weight gain.

Why does weight gain occur even when very little is eaten?
Genetic factors could cause a person to gain weight more readily. If a person’s parents are fat, chances are he will be fat, too.

Overfeeding babies in their first year increases their chances of becoming overweight. Another reason for weight gain when very little is eaten could be that what is eaten is high in calories. For example, the vegetables in a salad may have only 10-12 calories. However, many salad dressings, such as Thousand Island and mayonnaise, are made from oil and egg yolks, both of which are high in calories and cholesterol. For example, a tablespoon of Thousand Island dressing has 59 calories and 4 milligrams of cholesterol. A cup of milkshake alone could have around 2,000 calories—that’s the daily calorie requirement for a man!

Count your calories and control your calorie intake. Avoid meat, oil or deep-fried items for breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, it is also the meal that will cause you to put on weight most easily, as the digestive system is very ready to absorb food after a fast during the night.

Eat a plant-based breakfast instead. Also, eat slowly. Each meal should take at least half an hour. It takes 20 minutes for the “full” signal from the stomach to reach the brain.

I have switched to a vegetarian diet. Why have I not lost any weight?
Vegetable oil used in vegetarian diets is high in calories, and vegetarian food is often fried for taste. High-calorie vegetable oil and frying are not beneficial for weight loss. Avoid oil and frying, and eat steamed and boiled foods. It is best to have a balanced plant-based diet to control calorie intake and maintain good health.

Why am I not losing weight even though I use margarine instead of butter, and vegetable oil instead of animal fat?
Butter and margarine can contain the same amount of calories. One tablespoon of butter, or the same amount of margarine, contains around 100 calories. The same applies to animal fat such as bacon grease and vegetable oil. One tablespoon of each contains around 130 calories. It is no surprise then, that simply switching to margarine and vegetable oil will not contribute to weight loss. It is best to avoid them to reduce your calorie intake.

I don’t want to eat like a rabbit. Can I rely on exercise to burn calories?

Low-calorie foods include boiled or steamed food, and plant foods. Some people may not be used to the lighter taste of these foods at the beginning, preferring more tasty, stir-fried or even deep-fried food. Hence, they may turn to exercise as a weight loss solution. While exercise can help to burn calories, it is not as effective as reducing calorie intake. Continuously jogging for one hour may burn about 413 calories, equivalent to the amount of calories from drinking three cans of cola. However, this can be highly strenuous for a person who is not used to the intensity of the exercise yet.

Reducing calorie intake does more than help weight loss. Low-calorie foods tend to have more nutrients that benefit health. Also, good nutrition and regular exercise are both necessary for strengthening the immune system. Determination is needed to succeed in weight management, so keep at it!

Will I lose more weight if I sleep less?
On the contrary, lack of sleep contributes towards weight gain. Research shows that lack of sleep may increase levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin and decrease the hormone leptin that makes a person feel full. Appetite becomes harder to curb and one may end up eating more high-calorie foods. A study found that during extra waking hours, calorie intake tends to be higher than calories burnt, contributing to weight gain.

Is drinking all-natural Chinese herbal tea a safe weight-loss method?

Many herbal slimming teas contain tea leaves or tea leaf extracts and laxatives. Tea leaves contain about 3.5% caffeine by weight.Caffeine is a stimulant and is harmful to the body.

Laxatives weaken the body’s immunity and cause diarrhea, anorexia and kidney failure. They can only stimulate the large intestine to promote excretion without burning calories, so they have no significant benefits to health.

What is a low-carbohydrate diet? Is it a healthy way to lose weight?

People on a low-carbohydrate diet cut out all carbohydrates from their diet and increase their intake of protein and fat. For example, they do not eat bread, rice and pasta but eat lots of meat, cheese and butter. Weight loss occurs quickly in the short run. However, most of the weight loss comes from loss of water and muscle tissue, not fat, which is what you need to lose to keep the weight off. Muscle burns more calories than fat does. A decrease in the amount of muscle tissue

Low-carbohydrate diets are not healthy. They allow very small amounts of fruit and vegetables and do not provide a balanced intake of nutrients. The high intake of meat for a prolonged period of time also puts one at risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and several types of cancer. A diet rich in animal protein also puts a huge strain on the kidneys.

When I'm dieting, I eat very little at one meal but feel very hungry thereafter and end up binging at the next meal. How can I conquer my hunger pangs?
Eat slowly. If you are used to eating meat, you can still have some meat. Choose lean cuts of meat, fish and poultry, such as chicken breast. Grill meat without oil; use a little salt and pepper to season it. Eat more steamed vegetables. Eating a high-fiber diet will help make you feel full for a longer period of time.

How can I lose one kilogram in a week?
Reduce your intake of bread, pastries and sauces. To lose one kilogram every week, it is recommended that females take only 800 calories daily and males 1,000 calories daily. Each biscuit has about 128 calories. Eating six to eight biscuits in a day would mean that you cannot eat anything else for the rest of the day if you want to lose one kilogram per week.

Item Quantity Calories

Butter cookie 100g  467

Will being on a diet slow down my metabolism and make it harder to lose weight in future?

It depends on what kind of diet you are on. Frequent improper dieting involving fasting or eating very little may result in the body getting used to low food consumption. Lacking fuel for muscles, the body prepares for starvation by storing fats and losing muscle tissue. With less muscle to burn calories, metabolism decreases. This makes it even harder to control weight as the lower metabolism requires even less calorie intake than before.

On the other hand, a low-calorie, plant-based balanced diet rich in protein builds muscles for burning fat. Metabolism is prevented from decreasing, and nutrients from wholesome foods contribute to good health.
