Liquid eyeliner is the makeup-industry standard for a bold, sharply defined line,  Place a mirror on a table in a well-lighted area and look down into the mirror while you're applying the liner; this lets you get the brush as close as possible to the base of your upper lashes and still see what you're doing. With the liner brush, make three or four small dots along the lash line--one near the tear duct, one or two along the lash line and one by the outer corner. Dip the brush into the liner again and "connect the dots" for a straight, unwavering line.

For a not-too-severe daytime look, apply a thin line of pencil liner all around the eye and then smudge it gently with your finger or a cotton swab. For a dramatic "smoky" eye, apply pencil liner very thickly and smudge it outward until you've achieved a striking effect. Dip a small brush in eye shadow that matches your liner and blend it over the existing line for an even smokier look.

Eyeliner dramatically enhances your eyes when you first apply it, but keeping the cosmetic in place for hours can present a challenge. Oil-based and wax-based eyeliners melt from body heat and migrate to the under-eye area. Powdered pigments have greater staying power and act as a dam to prevent eyeliner from shifting. Adding powder to both the un-lined skin and to the eyeliner itself ensures a lasting application.
