About this item: Framed by a golden border, this red and black shawl celebrates the textile traditions of Bhagalpur. Shailendra and Uvais present a soft shawl hand-woven with two types of silk, one of which is Tussar, which requires drying the cocoons to soften and reel the silk. The other is Eri, a silk that is heavier and appears like a long filament, and can be obtained from a live cocoon.
About our Artist: I am Shailendra and I was born and brought up in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a city with a rich cultural heritage and where family values are held at the highest esteem. I completed my studies in Textile Tech at the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology in Bhadohi, renowned for its hand-knotted rugs. Since my youth I've had the dream of being associated with someone who works for the betterment of people with economic hardships, to find a way of improving their living standards. When I was working for an export company I got the opportunity to visit Bhagalpur, famous for its hand-loomed silk products. It is here that I met Uvais, and thus the opportunity arose to make my dreams come true. Born in Nagalia Aqil, Uvais was already involved in helping weavers from remote villages of India improve their living by promoting their work. He also runs an NGO where 30 women make the most exquisite embroidery. When I met Uvais we immediately clicked, and we joined hands to work toward the empowerment of these weavers so they can improve their lives. Our mission is to reach more remote areas of Bhagalpur, offer better employment to weavers and in the process preserve Indian traditional textiles. Currently there are about 15... 0 |
