My clock came in with both the second and minute hands not attached to the center spindle along with a piece of 2 x 1/2 x 1/8 scrap metal inside the front glass housing. To prevent Walmart.com to ship the same clock back to me, so I reordered a second one. Waited until it arrived before I returned the first one. Surprisingly, the second one came in exactly like the first one: 2 unattached hands and a piece of scrap metal. I was planning to call La Crosse to find out exactly how they expect the user to set up this clock since the instruction did not state any thing about taking the glass housing apart. I decided to give it another try and ordered the third one but this time from Best Buy (same price). I was so pleased to first feel nothing rattling in the box when I received this third clock. I finally understood that piece of scrap metal is used to help balance the minute hand by having it attached on the under side of the opposite part from spindle of the minute hand so the long minute hand will not weight down when it points to horizontal positions. I see the way this piece of metal is attached to the minute hand with some cheap glue and I have a feeling it may fall off over time. But I am now happy with it. If the metal ever falls off, I will just re-glue it back with a better glue. I think what happened to Walmart's inventory is that the clocks were transported and stored upside down for long period of time and cause the minute hand to slip out which also bringing the second hand out at the same time. After further rattling, the metal came off the minute hand. The conclusion is that I like the clock and I am finally keeping one.
