Peter and Jane books published first in 1964, this series was to be used by parents and schools throughout the UK.

All of the books are  hardback volumes with 56 pages each, measuring 112×170 mm. Each book has text on a left page and an illustration on the facing right page.

The Key Words with Peter and Jane books are so successful because each of the key words is introduced gradually and repeated frequently. This builds confidence in children when they recognise these key words on sight.

The Key Words scheme is based on a recognition of the fact that just 12 words make up one quarter of all the English words we read and write and that 100 words make up a half of those we use in a normal day. Teach children these key words first, and they are well on the way to making some sense of most texts.
