Ask anyone in the lab if they have any sure tips on how to make things work. Most likely, their answer will be 'Follow the protocols.'

As easy as this may seem to most of us, scientific research is an area which requires discipline in following protocols and recording observations (or results). And to have a taste of that, our two Award Winning kits offer children a fun yet realistic experience on how it really feels to be a scientist!

Overview

Introduce your child to the amazing work of science and nature with the Be Amazing! My First Super Science Kit. Designed for young scientists ages 4 and up, this beginner kit features more than 70 hands-on experiments that cover a variety of scientific fields intended to engage and inform. With experiments covering the basics of magnification, electricity, absorption, growth of plants, and more, My First Super Science Kit is an ideal first step for any young scientific mind.

Introduces Young Children to Science

Specially designed for beginner scientists, Be Amazing!’s My First Super Science Kit will help open your child’s eyes to an exciting new scientific world. Activities cover earth, physical, and life science and touch on the very basic elements of chemistry, physics, and biology. The activities encourage young children to write down or draw their observations, helping to build good note-taking and reporting skills. The giant red magnifying glass will help young scientists look closely and discover new aspects of ordinary things they see in daily life. The kit is designed to teach the five areas of science education endorsed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, including: Count, Compare, Classify, Measure, and Observe.

More than 70 Hands-On Activities

Featuring a number of exciting and innovative experiments, My First Super Science Kit will keep your child enthralled. The Energy Stick teaches the fundamentals of electricity and circuits with lights and sounds that activate inside a clear, plastic tube when the metal rings on each end are touched simultaneously. Superabsorbent Crystals and Garbled Marbles grow and grow when you put them in water, becoming brightly colored, squishy chunks, or bouncy marble-sized orbs. When your child looks through the grown marbles, images are inverted and the clear marbles seem to disappear when dropped into water, teaching the basics of light refraction through water. Of the activities in the lab book, our testing team found that the most engaging were the ones that focused on unique materials found in the kit such as Superabsorbent Crystals, Insta-Snow and Energy Beads. Several of the activities require items that are not included in the kit, like potting soil, and seeds for the terrarium experiments. Other activities simply consist of gathering things from outside in your test tubes such as dirt, bugs, rain, or layers of different colored sand, teaching young scientists to observe and study the natural world around them.

What's in the Box?

  • Five test tubes and two test tube holders
  • Energy Stick
  • Giant, red magnifying glass
  • Multiple papers, powders, goos, and beads
  • Insta-Snow powder
  • Growing starfish and growing spider
  • Plastic popper
  • Magic, crystal-growing dog sponge
  • Energy Beads and yarn

Recommended for 4 to 8 years old.

Specially designed for beginner scientists ages four to eight, Be Amazing's My First Super Science Kit will help open your child's eyes to an exciting new scientific world. Activities in the included booklet cover three types of science--earth, physical, and life--and touch on the very basic elements of chemistry, physics, and biology.

Observe, Report, and Enjoy
The My First Super Science activities encourage children to write down and draw their observations, helping to build good note-taking and reporting skills. The giant red magnifying glass will help children look closely and discover new aspects of ordinary things they see every day.

Child-friendly and Hands-on
Beginning with a simple introduction to magnification and concluding with a host of experiments using the Tiger Eye Beads (a polymer), your child will eagerly look forward to each day’s experiment. My First Super Science Kit’s tote is filled with insulators, electrical circuits, polymer marbles, fake snow, test tubes, the new Energy Stick that makes your child a human circuit board while teaching about conductivity, and so much more.

More Than 75 Age-appropriate Experiments
As with the original Big Bag of Science, a dozen or so of My First Super Science Kit’s experiments are of the fairly mundane use-a-test-tube-to-watch-roots-grow variety, but for this age group the simplicity is appropriate. With instructions and supplies for over seventy-five easy hands-on experiments, My First Super Science Kit could be the most exciting part of your child’s science this year.

On the Energy Stick

The Energy Stick is the newest tool in experimenting with open and closed circuits. Completely safe to touch and handle, the Energy Stick features electrodes on each end of its 7.5" long tube. When these electrodes are touched simultaneously, long-lasting LED lights inside the tube flash and the tube makes a noise. Release one or both of the electrodes and the flashing lights and noise stop. Do it over and over again... it works every time!

That's awesome, but did you know that you can do the same thing with an entire circle of people? It's true! Gather up an entire class, youth group, or party to hold hands in a circle. Have one participant hold one electrode and the person next to him or her hold the other electrode. If everyone in the circle is holding hands, the Energy Stick will do its magic. But as soon as someone breaks the circle it will stop. How many people can you get to complete the circuit? 20? 50? 100?!?!

The Energy Stick's sensing circuit is so sensitive that it can detect even a very small amount of electricity that travels across your skin! It's completely safe, and it's a totally cool way to learn about conductors of electricity.

The Energy Stick is a great toy to explore the science of electricity and circuits. Electricity is defined as the flow of electrons through a circuit (and circuit is based upon the word circle). In order for the Energy Stick to become activated, the two ends must be connected in a circle by something that allows electrons to flow through it.

What does it teach?
Put one hand on the top and the other on the bottom of the Energy Stick and the flashing lights and sound maker let you know that you've completed the circuit. The Energy Stick sends out a safe electrical signal that powers the flashing lights and buzzer when you use your body to complete the circuit. The electricity travels safely on your skin to complete the circuit.

Try it with friends! Invite everyone to join in the fun by holding hands and forming a large circle to test their conductivity. The Energy Stick is a great visual aid and hands-on science tool that teaches young scientists about open and closed circuits as well as conductors and insulators.

Teaser:

Activity #27 Terrific Tie-Dye
Make your own tie-dyed picture!

From the kit:
Filter paper (circular white paper)
Pipette
Marker

You get it:
Cup of water
A couple of pieces of paper or newspaper
Large pan or dish, like a cookie sheet or casserole dish (pick one that is ok to get a little bit of marker on)

Let’s Try It!
1. Place a piece of filter paper on top of the extra papers you gathered (this will keep the markers from bleeding through onto your table)
2. Use the marker to draw a design on the filter paper
3. Put the filter paper in the pan or dish
4. Use the pipette to SLOWLY drop about 10-20 drops of water onto the design on the filter paper. What do you think will happen?

How does it work?
Although the ink in the marker looks green it really contains more than one kind of color or pigment. The different pigments are actually different kinds of molecules. The different molecules have different properties. For instance, the pigment molecules are different sizes, some are more soluble in water than others and some are more attracted to paper molecules than the others.

When water is dropped onto the filter paper, it soaks into it. Do you remember why? The pigments in the marker are water soluble meaning that water can dissolve them. As the water moves through the filter paper it takes dissolved pigments with it. However, since the pigments have different properties they move through the paper at different speeds. This results in a spreading out of the pigments in the paper.
