How many times do you go out to eat? How many times do you have your baby or toddler with you? If you do, chances are you are using a restaurant highchair. Of course the idea is to wipe the chair off before putting your little one in it. But how often do you actually do it? After reading this you may think again.

In the April 2011 issue of Parents magazine, there was a short article about a study done by the University of Arizona. In this study, researchers swabbed the arms and seats of thirty restaurant highchairs. Keep in mind that all of these highchairs looked clean. When the results came in, the bacteria counts were much higher than that of an average public toilet seat. Not a countertop, not a door handle, not even an average home toilet seat…but a public toilet seat.

People use paper seat covers rather than sit on a public toilet, but may be putting their child in a seat that is much dirtier.So what do you do? Stop bringing the kids when you eat out? For most of us, this isn’t always an option. The Parents magazine article recommends using anti-bacterial wipes to wipe the highchair. This is a great idea, but if you forget the wipes, you’re stuck.Another idea is a seat cover.
