What is the difference of a regular thermometer and a basal thermometer?
A regular thermometer usually takes temp in one minute or longer, because it needs to go over long time to get the highest body temperature for clinical diagnosi. It requires less sensitive normally ±0.1C. A basal thermometer mainly used for basal body thermometer (BBT) charting. Firstly, it needs to be more sensitive to ±0.05C, so that it can read the 0.5C temp rise before and after ovulation. Secondly, it would better to read fast. Since BBT is the lowest temperature of body, which usually attains during sleep. Any activities after wake up will rise our body temperature. Thus it would better to get a fast one to take temp, before our body "wake up" totally.

Why I got different readings with different thermometer?
For regular thermometer, which go as long time as one minutes, you should got a simliar reading. But as to a fast reading thermometer, you cannot test it in this way. Because the body temperature shifts time by time, seconds by seconds. You can put them in a cup of warm water which temperature close to body, and dig two fast reading thermometer into it to see if they got the same result. In this case, the cup of warm water just like a thermostatic bath. All Wagen thermometer is strictly tested to meet the accuracy and sensitivity requirement in thermostatic bath.
