Choosing the Right Teat for Your Baby
The Closer to Nature teat can be bought in slow? medium? fast and vari-flow options. You should select the flow rate most suited to your baby's needs at every stage. All teats are supplied with an age range; this acts as a guide only? as every baby is different and will develop at different rates. The flow rate can be located on the actual teat in the form of a number - 1 is slow? 2 is medium? and 3 is fast.

There are separate teats for the Vented and Comfort bottle ranges. These teats do not feature the Easi-Vent valve? as they have a tube and valve system to provide optimum venting during feeding. The teats are clearly labelled with an 'anti-colic' mark on the teat and the packaging has a green background to help distinguish the range.

Signs that your baby is ready to progress onto the next teat include trying to suck harder to get more milk or becoming frustrated and tired during feeds. It is recommend to change your teats every four to six weeks or at the first sign of any wear and tear.

Teat Collapse Resolution
There are two reasons a teat may collapse. One is an indication that your baby is ready for a faster flowing teat and may be sucking so hard that the teat cannot release the air fast enough and collapses. The other is that the Closer to Nature Easi-Vent teats are made from very soft silicone? which can remould when not in use? for example when on the shelf in store.

You will have noticed a small tent-like vent on the inside of the teat - this should have a small slit along it which allows the airflow through the bottle and if this remoulds it will cause the teat to collapse during a feed.

All you need to do to rectify this problem is to rub the valve between your fingers and thumb until the slit re-opens. You will only need to do this once and the teat should then function as normal.

Using your Closer to Nature Digital Thermometer

An incorrect reading (around 2°C lower) can be measured if the ear canal is not straightened correctly. The ear canal is not identical in each ear; this can result in a slight difference in some individuals.

The instructions for use advise that three readings should be taken? with the highest being the one which is registered. The unit measures the infrared heat generated by the eardrum.

It is therefore important to straighten the ear canal prior to taking a reading. For children under 2 years old? gently pull the ear back. User technique is critical.

Troubleshooting tips

  • The ear canal needs to be clean
  • The thermometer lens needs to be clean and undamaged
  • A fresh hygiene cover must be used each time
  • The unit must be equilibrated to the temperature of the room where readings are taken
  • Accidentally pressing the on/mem button instead of the scan button will show a previous reading from the memory rather than take a new reading
  • A higher temperature will be recorded in an ear that a child has been laying on compared to their other ear

What should I do if my baby gets too cold or too hot?

If your baby has woken up because he is too cold? pick him up and adjust either the temperature of the room? or the baby's clothing. You can cuddle your baby in his Grobag to warm him up again before putting him back? warm and cosy in his crib If your baby feels hot? you should cool him down by removing some clothing? then either adjust the temperature of the bedroom or the clothes your baby is wearing before returning him to his cot.
