The backing line is what we call a so-called lower winding thread. In ordinary reels, the inner diameter of the spool is thin and it is easy to wrap around and even if all the fly lines are wound, a gap will be formed in the spool, so winding the backing line and spooling
After enlarging the inner diameter, connect the backing line and the fly line and push them to the reel.
As another use, when the target is a large fish and it is used in the lake or the sea, when the fish runs, since the fly line alone is not enough, the backing line is used as the spare line.
In the case of ultra long casts, there are times when casting backing lines.
In "large arbor reels" with large spool inner diameter and ultra small reels, backing lines are often not used.
Generally it is like a narrow octopus thread, some are colored yellow or the like.
In the case of a colored line, there is something in which the color shifts to the fly line
