The history of taping therapeutics
The taping method was developed by a Japanese chiropractor, Dr. Kenzo Kase, as an alternative to rigid sports taping. In 1973 during research on sports taping for the purpose of treating muscles and arthritis, Dr Kase saw that for many muscular injuries that restricting mobility was not as beneficial as using tape to improve mobility. From this idea the way functional taping was born and from that the kinesio tape. Since then, the use of kinesiotaping therapy has expanded into the realm of elite level sports, geriatric rehabilitation and can now used for the general public.
How It Works
The Principle of Taping
The purpose of Taping is to prevent and protect joints and muscle injuries. It involves elastic tapes that do not contain gel-like pain relief patches and reinforce their function. When one has disorders of pain, taping on the skin, muscle and fascia joints can restore basic human function. Taping is designed to be well ventilated, and balances the body with the muscle because of its excellent ventilation and soft adhesive strength durability. Also, the tape is elastic and its elasticity is similar to human muscle contraction which allows us to derive fundamental body reactions. Taping keeps the muscle from being overextended, and by lifting up the skin (about 10 micron) the space between the skin and muscle is broadened. At this moment the skin forms a spiral (wave) shape, flow of the blood and lymph is promoted between the fascial linings and the ability to propagate is fostered, which soothes pain. Also, motion function of the muscle is improved, allowing us to do physical efforts healthily. Thus, Taping Therapy has no side effects, is easy to perform, and overall works fast.

The skin forms a spiral shape and flow of the blood and lymph is promoted between the fascial linings.
The Benefits of Taping
Taping therapy is very simple therefore easy to apply at home. There are four ways as to how the tape can positively affect the musculoskeletal system.

Improving muscular function and preventing secondary damage and dysfunction. Primary pain and dysfunction causes a compensatory effect putting strain on secondary structures. By using the tex tape to improve function, damage to the secondary structures can be reduced if not prevented.

Promote circulation. The tape is designed to gently lift the skin’s surface to promote flow of fluids to and from the affected area. Hence the tape is highly effective in relieving bruising and swelling.

To alleviate the pain. Application of the tape activates mechanical receptors inhibiting the pain receptors.

Correcting joint alignment and dysfunction. Applying tape to protect and improve misaligned and dysfunctional joints can also improve muscle tone and function, thereby reducing pain.

Taping Tips
Unlike pain relief patches or conventional strapping tapes, starting point and end point of the painful muscle needs to be located first before applying the kinesiotape for its maximal effect.
For inhibitory effect of hypertonic or overused muscles, tape from insertion to origin.
For stability effect of weak muscles which may cause other structures to receive overload (ie. Tendonitis, fasciitis, epicondylitis, etc.), tape from origin to insertion.
Please cleanse the area properly and make sure muscle to be utilized is stretched to its end range as far as possible. Cut the tape according to the size of the muscle. Do not stretch or extend the tape.
Apply the tape only when the muscle is completely stretched out as far as it can for proper application.
Kinesiotape was designed to be used for more than a day. When tape is applied properly, it should not be easily removed even if it gets wet from your showers or swimming. If it gets wet, please pat dry or use your hairdryer.
When removing tape, roll tape off gently in the opposite direction.
Please refer to taping manual for different taping method for specific symptoms and signs.
Warning
If taped area becomes uncomfortable, please remove and re-apply the tape. Occasionally, adhesive glue within the tape could irritate the skin after one or two days of application, if taped area becomes red or irritated, please remove the tape immediately.
